According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 5 billion people in the world are consuming harmful trans fats or trans fatty acids through various foods. The organization informed this information on Monday.
According to WHO, 500,000 people die of coronary heart disease every year. Trans fats are responsible for this. A call was made in 2018 to eliminate this harmful substance by 2023. A total of 2.8 billion people in 43 countries are trying to change their eating habits. But most are not food conscious.
An annual report found that efforts to change eating habits or adherence to ‘best dietary practices’ are not visible. Therefore, efforts to eliminate harmful fats in industrially-produced food must continue for a long time.
The agency’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said trans fats are not inherently beneficial. It is very hazardous to health, which increases the cost of health management. But avoiding trans fat is cost-effective and healthy.
Trans fats are often used in packaged foods, baked goods, and cooking oils. The WHO director general says it should have no place in food. It’s time to avoid it.
